Airports and seaports comprise many components of transportations and critical Infrastructure: airplanes, cargo ships, cruise ships, light and heavy rail, bridges and buildings to name a few. From supply chain security which starts at origin to destination to transporting people around the world each step requires the integration of security.
Security in the United States is part of a layered approach with as many as 15 levels. This can involve several agencies of the government. Port authorities are public entities chartered by the federal, state, county or local government. They are autonomous with a executive director who oversees the day to day operations. Some airports and seaports are part of the same authority while others are separate entities. One thing for sure from country to country and port to port all are a little different in the way they are organized and operate.
In the United States port authorities work with the Coast Guard (USCG), the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), Custom and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration Custom Enforcement (ICE), Federal Air Marshals (FAMs), state and local first responders.
Together as a team each play a role their role of security. Airport and seaport police are men and women who are on the frontline. Some departments are just a few individuals up to several hundred officers and detectives. Some seaports have security forces and relay on mutual aid for sworn officers, but most major ports have their own police force. |
